How long have you been a member of SBS? 7 years
What roles do you currently play within the society? Secretary, Communications Team, Captain of Illuminated Pieces, Tab Team Member
What does this role/roles involve? Being secretary involves attending committee meetings which are generally held monthly, increasing to weekly in the build up to the 5th. We discuss all matters relating to the society and to our relationship with BONCO, the other bonfire societies and the civil authorities. We maintain oversight of the arrangements for the 5th and ensure all planning is in place for a safe and enjoyable evening, and we discuss the all important, year-round fundraising activities.
The Communications Team have responsibility for the society’s social media presence and website, as well as email messaging and event advertising. My key role in the team involves website and Facebook group maintenance.
As Captain of Illuminated Pieces I have responsibility for the society’s poppies and other illuminated pieces which are carried in procession and lit at the memorials and at prayers. I can call upon the services of the most excellent Small Builds Team and a fine group of skilled fusers who help maintain and repair the pieces and prepare them for use on the 5th. On the night itself I ensure that the pieces and their carriers are in the right place at the right time.
The Tab Team design and build the Tableaux in absolute secrecy, tow it through town on the 5th with chaotic noisy terror, and then merrily drink Harveys as we see it dispatched with explosive on the firesite.
How long have you held this position/positions? 2 – 6 years
What other roles have you played? I’ve made in excess of 11 torches.
What do you most love about your role/s? Lighting the Pieces at the memorial is a nerve-shattering but incredible experience, and I love seeing months of work explode in seconds when we blow up the Tab. But the best thing by far is the bonfire community and the friends I have made. Even when they blow holes in my hat.
