How long have you been a member of SBS? Since 2005
What roles do you currently play within the society? Committee, Membership Team
What does this role/roles involve? I’m a member of the Committee where I cover Membership matters, and am involved in the general day to day running of the Society. We meet about once a month, and more often running up to the fifth.
I’ve been an active member of SBS since we reformed in 2005. As Knick the Knife, I cut most of the hessian used for torches in the first 10 years, and I’ve helped wherever help was needed, organizing torch dipping and distribution, working on the fire-site, fusing fireworks, towing the tab, clearing up.
In recent years, I’ve been using my professional IT Skills to ensure smooth running of MoJo as part of the Membership Team, and I’ve been hands on with the Fire-site Team. Sourcing and collecting brush wood, and materials for Crosses, setting out the Fire-site, putting up fencing, securing the Pyro and Tab Areas, erecting public enclosure, setting up the base for the Bonfire.
I work with the Torch Making team to cover wrapping of Crosses & Fiery pieces, and for my main Bonfire task, I organise and manage Dipping. This is an intense period covering construction of dipping & drying racks; kerosene supply; three shifts of dippers; dipping, drying & distribution of Torches, Crosses & Fiery pieces and then the deconstruction, and return to store of all the Dipping equipment.
After dipping I rejoin the Fire-site team for clear up, cool down, deconstruction, and several days of getting everything back where it belongs.
How long have you held this position/positions? Committee for 4 years, other roles for longer.
What other roles have you played? Hessian Cutting and Torch Making
What do you most love about your role/s? Great to meet people to a common purpose, involving Fire, Noise and History.
